Treats and Then Tricks

It rained, and rained, and rained. When Terry got home from work, we spent a couple of hours mopping up the flooding basement. We seem to have a huge problem under the front porch. The water leaks in from the ceiling, the floor, and seeps right through the cement block walls. I'm not sure yet what we're going to do about that, but we have to put off finishing the basement floors until it dries up. Anyway, it's our first Halloween in our new house, so we forgot about the watery basement and went out to the porch.
We sat out on the porch with our buckets of candy and thoroughly enjoyed all of the adorable children (and a few questionable ones). We felt really good about the neighborhood and all of the people who came by, and when the candy ran out, we locked up and went inside.
Terry and I went upstairs, to our bedroom, to fold and put away laundry, and a couple of minutes into it, BAM! Something hit our bedroom window. We were confused by the noise, and went to look out the window. Someone had thrown an egg, and had pretty good aim, I might add.
I cannot believe they hurled an egg, that far, and hit our second story window dead on. We went outside and people were everywhere, but no one saw anything, but one woman said a group of kids were running down the street.
Geez, this neighborhood is maddening. We want to like it, but it keeps fighting back (just like the house). A few months into living here, and we have had our car broken into, dirt thrown all over our porch, a kid actually peed on my front lawn (while I watched him out the picture window), and now, an egg thrown at the house (during the height of busy trick-or-treating).
Well, Terry tried to hose the egg off the window, but of course, it's like glue, so tomorrow we will be hanging out the second story window, trying to clean off the goo. Then back down to the basement to figure out our Titanic mess.
Right now, I just feel tired and hateful toward teenagers. Boo.

Down to the Basement, Out to the Garage

Ah yes, here's where we started.

And look at us now. It feels so good to clean up this mess, and make it all fresh and clean.

Mr. garage door man came today, and made Terry very happy. He took down the 60 year old Stanley doors, which were filled with bricks. We did not know this, but back then, they used bricks in the door casings as a balancing tool. I guess, when you opened the door, the bricks would hold the weight at the top, to keep it open (whatever). You learn something new every day.

One guy, six hours, and here are the awesome new doors. The color is Sandstone, and it matches the random same colored bricks on the garage. Love it, but now the gutters look dirty...

Inside view. He doesn't look happy here, but trust me, he is.

Back down to the basement tomorrow, to finish the other half of the room.

Happy Boo Day !

The Basement

Back down in the basement. We got some buckets of White paint, and started freshening up the walls. Goal number one, down here, is to get rid of the stink.

After we painted the walls, we laid down some primer for the floor paint.

We're going to do 1/2 the basement floor at a time. I love painting the floor. it's actually fun. Tomorrow, the primer should be dry, and I can put the first coat of paint the floor.

Just a reminder, for anyone who questions our simple, and cheap basement fix...

When we bought the house (last Winter), there was sitting water, and water damage (mold) all around the basement. When Spring rolled around, water seemed to be leaking in from everywhere; through the base, through the concrete walls, and dripping down from under the porch. Terry has gutted the entire basement, ridding it of all moldy wood, paneling, and floor tiles. He has also fixed the gutters outside, and improved the conditions that made basement flooding possible.

When Summer came, the water dried up, and we haven't had any water in the basement since.

That being said, we have no idea what Springtime will bring, so we are going to go with some real simple clean-up techniques until we find out if we are dry, or soaked, come Spring.

Floor painting tomorrow, and, oh yes... new garage doors. Off I go to bed, cause the garage guys will be here first thing in the morning.

I Need a Personal Assistant

It's that time of year again.

Sandy always makes a cute face, and I always make an evil cat face...???

I hate picking the goop out of the seeds...

But, I love the seeds.

I thought this basement work would move a lot faster, but alas, there was much scraping and mopping, and more scraping and mopping.

It is now ready for wall and floor paint.

Probably won't get much done till the weekend though. Going to mom's tomorrow, getting new garage doors on Wednesday, hopefully getting a new lease car on Thursday (and it's Halloween), Sandy's got the dentist, the list goes on and on.

And this why I am always working on projects at midnight...

Carry on.

Basement Renovation

Wow !!! I planned on an all weekend gig, but Terry and I knocked it out in one evening.

When he got home from work, we went at it hard. 800 square feet of tile: scraped, bagged, and hauled out.

Plenty of mopping... bleach, bleach, bleach.

We're on our way.

After all this, we even had time to go grocery shopping.

I guess we are going to fast-track this weekend. Floor and wall painting, and I sense a trip to Home Depot coming...

Saving my Pennies

I thought it would be nice to remind myself of how far we've come on "Project House".
This nasty dining room was so offensive to me. The pea green color of paint and the awful asbestos tile was too much. But look at it now. It is my favorite room in the house...

New flooring, new window, new lighting, my recycled shelving, a nice neutral color, and all of my favorite things, make this room comfy and inviting.

The kitchen was original to 1940. We tore out the asbestos flooring, painted the cupboards (painted everything), new lighting, new tile backsplash, new butcher block counter, new faucet...

installed a dishwasher and garbage disposal, new faucet, cabinet hardware, and all new appliances.

It looks good, but this kitchen still needs major work. After Robin saves up some pennies, it will get all new cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, modern countertops, a pantry, and a new window.

For now, it's good enough to whip out one of Robin's 10 minute meals...

but, Robin always wants more...

Robin needs more pennies.

Cold Outside, Down to the Basement

We have sat and watched TV, and slept, and been lazy long enough. This evening, we got busy downstairs. All of this asbestos tile needs to go.

Soaking the tile helps to loosen it, while also keeping down the airborne asbestos when tiles break.

Soaking it also makes the moldy, musty old smell come out. This is a nasty job !!!

I thought it was funny to see these two sections: one we've finished, next to what we're working on.

Just proves, it can be done.

Lazy Weekend

Update on Terry's brother: He was not being released from the hospital. He walked out, and right back to the life we were praying he would change. We did all we could, the rest is up to him...

Here is what I have been spending way to much time on. My brilliant son makes these computer games that he knows I will become addicted to. It did get me through the awful elimination game that the Tigers played last night. I played through the whole game, and got a new high score !!!

This morning, we went shopping for mom. Well, we went to the store hungry, and ended up buying a lot of junk for ourselves. Mom has a list, we do not. We just run willy-nilly through the store picking up whatever looks yummy.
I got all the fixings for submarine sandwiches, and that's what was for dinner tonight. They were yummy...

And the big ta-da...

LOOK WHAT I FOUND !!! PRETZEL BUNS. I DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THEM MYSELF !!!

I've been searching online for a recipe for these yummy, delicious buns, and was planning to try to make some myself. We've had a Pretzel bacon cheeseburger at Wendy's, and a pretzel bacon cheesy hot dog at Sonic, and once you've crossed that line, you are never returning to regular buns...

Can't wait to make some homemade burgers, on these buns.

What did I get done this weekend? Nothing.

Good Deeds

Robin put on her cleaning hat, and this mess...

turned into a kitchen sink.

This amazing mess...

turned back into a kitchen table.

This was gross, but...

turned back into a stove.

My very first conquest, today, was turning this back into an end table.
I don't know, and don't even care what all of those remotes are for.

I've never actually seen a "bookworm" before. Now I have.

Here's the living room after a whole day of cleaning. I spent hours on the entertainment center, and I brought in a new area rug from home. The curtains still need washing...

and the couches are going to be replaced with our hand-me-downs.

Here is where Terry spent the day. I spent the day with my hands in bleach, and he spent the day with his hands in sewage. He worked on replacing the toilet, which was (of course) more than he bargained for. It is working now, but nothing else is. The kitchen sink and the bathtub are clogged; run the kitchen water, bathtub backs up, run the bath water, the sink backs up.

In the middle of all this, the brother calls and says the hospital is releasing him tomorrow !!!

We are going to call our favorite guys, "All About Plumbing" to help out.

I am a little disappointed. I couldn't even get my bleach bottle near this bathroom. I could not get in there and clean it up, and I fear that once the brother gets home, I won't be able to do any more.

This particular "project house" is much more than we bargained for. The owner/brother will probably not be receptive to our help once he is home.

I guess, we'll see how he reacts to what we have done, and hopefully he will let us keep helping him out.

Today was a good, busy day. We started out by taking crates of dog food, and treats (from the brother's house) to the local shelter (they were very appreciative). We stopped at mom's and picked up this cute ceramic pumpkin (he likes his new home). We worked all afternoon on brother's house. Ran home (Sandy made dinner :), and went back to work some more.

It's tired... but it's good tired.

Another Tour of Duty

Project house sits idle again, as we take care of family health crises. Here we are walking into St. John, Oakland, with Terry's brother. His health is failing, and we took him to the emergency room last night.

Lots of tests and lots of waiting. There's my schmoopsie, being very patient (just glad he's not the patient).
Now the brother is safely tucked away in the hospital (having more tests), and it's time for me and Terry to work some magic on this old hermit's house.
He has a slight hoarding problem, and we are going to make his house clean and livable again.

Can this bathroom be saved?
Of course!!!
Bleach, bleach, bleach.
Terry tore out the ages old toilet, and we will bring in a new one.

His dog was very old, and recently put down, but there are cans and cans of dog food, and bags and bags of treats left in the house. We are donating all of it to the Humane Society tomorrow.

There were also enough bottles and cans around the house to pay for the new toilet. We loaded them up, and took them in. When I took this picture of Terry, everyone in the recycling bay thought I was nuts. Ha ha, who cares what they think. This is how I get my awesome blog pictures !

Kidding aside, I have censored much of what is happening with Terry's brother, for the sake of his privacy. He is not a participant on this blog, and we respect his anonymity.

Hopefully with the right treatment, he will be well enough to come home in the next week, and we will have the house all cleaned up for his return.

Tomorrow, we must take care of his bills and banking, shop for a toilet, visit him, drop off donations to the Humane Society, more house cleaning, and if I'm feeling really freaky... I'm going to see what's going on in this bachelor's refrigerator.

Carry on...

I'm Not Crazy

The meek, the mild; the people who offer nothing, yet ask for nothing. These people are tucked away in homes, out on the streets, and sometimes right under our noses. Most times, we forget to notice them, and they slip between the cracks, or get lost in the daily rush of our lives. Perhaps, we purposely ignore them, because it scares us, or we really are selfish and don't want to spend the extra minute. Perhaps it hits us a little too close to home, reminding us of our own problems or fears.

Mental illness will affect every one of us, at some point in our lives; whether it is a loved one, a stranger, or even ourselves. How we react to mental illness is key in the continuation of our civilized society. We cannot continue to ignore the growing dilemma before us, as "mental" conditions are on the rise, and the government, and insurance companies refuse to acknowledge psychological disorders as tangible health crises that merit coverage and treatment.

How do you explain mental illness to someone who is not affected by it? How do you define it as a "health matter" rather than just calling someone crazy, and thinking they have control over their mental state? How can we possibly have a healthy society without working toward an acceptance of cognitive disorders and how to effectively treat them?

In the mean time, it is everyone's duty to be tolerant, helpful, and do some homework. Education helps us to understand, and helps us, to help others in need.

Happy to be Busy

Terry finished my planter box. It's behind "in the way" dog. I swear, she walks into at least half of all pictures I try to take.
Thanks sweetie, for making this happen. I love it.

Cement is curing nicely. More kudos for Terry, as he just saved us a few hundred bucks !!!

This is an odd little area, next to the driveway. Due to city codes, a corner lot privacy fence must be set back, on an angle, in order to see the sidewalk while backing out. So, we're left with a weird triangular patch of dirt. I should also note that there was a towering old pine right in this spot, hence, the massive roots that Terry is fighting with.

We planted a Maiden Grass specimen here. It is so pretty, and unusual in colors. It's Cream, and Red, and Yellow, and Green. It should do nicely in this sunny spot.

This is all I'm going to plant here, for now. Tomorrow, I'll work on the rest of the area, Finish it off with some mulch and some kind of border.

There's the back of the house, and the dog !!!

We just feel happy here.
